Guide for parents

Does my child really need tuition? Questions to ask before you sign up

Somewhere around Class 3 or 4, almost every parent hears it at a PTM or in the class WhatsApp group: "Everyone in her class goes for tuition." Then the worry starts. Is my child falling behind? Should I find someone before the half-yearly exams?

Tuition is not a bad thing. For many children, especially when both parents work late, it is the only time an adult sits with them over schoolwork. But it is worth being clear about what it can and cannot do, because a tutor with a batch of children cannot babysit each one, and even a good tutor can end up pulling your child in a different direction from the school.

1. Is it one subject or everything?

If marks have dropped in all subjects at once, the reason is usually not academic. Sleep, a new school, friends, too much screen time, or simply a hard month at home can all show up as bad marks. A tutor will not fix that. If it is only maths, or only Hindi, that is much easier to work on.

2. Can you find the exact topic?

"Weak in maths" is not something anyone can fix. "Gets confused when the fractions have different denominators" is. Sit with the last test paper or the school copy and look at where the marks were cut. Most of the time you will find two or three topics, not the whole book.

3. Is it understanding, or is it carelessness?

Ask your child to explain one wrong answer to you. If they get it right when they slow down, the problem is speed or carelessness, and regular practice with feedback helps. If they cannot explain it at all, they missed the idea in class and someone needs to teach it again. That someone could be you, an older cousin, the class teacher, or yes, a tutor.

4. Will the tuition follow the school, or its own plan?

This is the question most parents forget to ask. Many tuition centres run their own schedule, sometimes a chapter or two ahead of the school, sometimes behind, sometimes from a different guide book altogether. For a child who is already struggling, studying the same subject two different ways in the same week is confusing. Ask the tutor to look at the school diary and the syllabus for the next test, and to work on those chapters.

5. What will your child actually do there?

Ask how the tutor will find out what your child does not understand. A good tutor will want to see the school copy and test papers first. Be careful if the hour is mostly "completing homework" or copying dictated answers. Your child needs to do the thinking, not just come home with a neat notebook.

When tuition does make sense

Some situations really do need a person: a child who has fallen a full year behind, a board year where neither parent can help with the subject, or a child who simply works better with someone sitting next to them. That is completely fine. Even then, a short daily practice at home on the school's chapter makes the tuition hours go much further.

Try this for one week first

Pick the chapter your child is doing in school this week. Let them do one short practice set each evening, and look at the mistakes together. At the end of the week you will know much more about what they need than any report card can tell you. NoTuition.in's free plan opens one full chapter in every subject, which is enough for exactly this experiment.
